Objectives & Key Results (OKR) is a widely practiced framework used to set goals, track progress for the set goals and define measurable outcomes that constitute success for the set goals.
In short, you can simplify it into 2 key parts:
- Objectives: What goal do you want to achieve?
- Key Results: How do you plan to achieve the goal and measure success progress?
Typically, you can set 3-5 Key Results for each Objective.
You can use this OKR framework to set company-wide goals, team goals and personal individual goals, aligning everyone together for collective organisational success in your company culture.
Example of OKR in practice (Marketing team):
For this illustration, we will focus on how the Marketing team of a company can use the company-wide OKR for their goal setting.
1. Company-wide OKR
Objective: Capture market share of _____ by launching new product
Key Results: Launch new product with target features by _____
Key Results: Achieve sales revenue of _____ for new product
Key Results: Gain market awareness of _____ for new product
2. Marketing team OKR
Objective: Gain market awareness of _____ for new product
Key Results: Generate _____ inbound leads of new product
Key Results: Run _____ marketing campaigns for new product

3. Marketing team member's personal individual OKR

Concluding remarks
OKR is an effective way to set goals for and align your company culture towards achieving them collectively. This also highlights how everyone has an important part to play in contributing to the overall big picture for company-wide success.
You can also complement your OKR setting by applying the S.M.A.R.T. acronym as well. For more on this, check out our write-up post on S.M.A.R.T. goal setting here.
