Culturedation: Applying S.M.A.R.T. goal setting as part of your Company Culture

As part of getting work done in your company culture, it is important to set goals as a form of direction and focus for your workplace efforts.

For this, you can apply the S.M.A.R.T. acronym to help you when setting your goals.

What does S.M.A.R.T. stand for?

S: Specific
M: Measurable
A: Achievable
R: Relevant
T: Time-bound

The S.M.A.R.T. acronym is an approach you can apply for improved clarity on not just your set goals, but how to actually achieve them successfully. You can apply this and customise accordingly for your short, medium and long-term goals.

Example of applying the S.M.A.R.T. in practice:

Example goal: Improving personal sales as company's Sales Consultant

Specific: Be as specific as possible. Instead of just "Improve personal sales", ideally include the extent of the desired improvement and how you aim to achieve it. For example, "Improve personal sales by ___% by doing sales activities ____."

Measurable: How do you measure progress? For example, in addition to measuring the ___% sales improvement, you can also measure your sales activities, e.g. increasing sales calls, client meetings and sent proposals by ____.

Achievable: Is this set goal realistically achievable in consideration of current resources? For example, is the set ___% sales improvement and sales activities ___ achievable and realistic?

Relevant: How is this goal relevant to you and your company? How does improving your personal sales contribute to wider and broader company goals? For example, overall company revenue targets, market penetration etc?

Time-bound: What is the time-bound timeline you are setting to monitor your sales improvement goal progress? For example, weekly, monthly, quarterly etc?

Concluding remarks:

It is pointless to set goals when you do not have clarity on what success means for the set goals. The S.M.A.R.T. acronym can help you with this.

Work not just hard, but also S.M.A.R.T. on your goals as part of your company culture.
